Green Garden Mutual Insurance

Our History

Green Garden Mutual Insurance Company was founded on March 23, 1867 by Henry R. Stassen, Jr., a young immigrant farmer who came to this country from Germany and settled in Monee, Illinois. Henry and eight other farmers from Green Garden Township started the Green Garden Mutual with the concept of neighbors, hand in hand, helping neighbors with the result of a lower insurance rate than that of the old line Eastern insurance companies. The first loss was a cow struck by lightning. The amount paid for the loss was $20.00.
For the first 50 years, until 1917, all business was conducted in the German language. With the change to the English language, the Company continued to progress making policy and coverage changes as growing needs in the industry dictated. Through the growth and change, the constant has always been neighbor helping neighbor.
In 1960 our first home office building was constructed. Then in 1992 our present home office was constructed to satisfy our need for additional space due to continued growth. At present, with all the changes that have taken place during our history, the company still goes back to its roots to serve others and help people restore their lives after a disaster strikes. No matter how big or small the claim, Green Garden Mutual Insurance Company provides the services that you expect and deserve. We have not forgotten the "people oriented" committment our Company was founded on, neighbors helping neighbors. It has worked for over 138 years and we think it will work for the next 138 years.
